STEM Education

Sunday Friends recognizes that children who have positive experiences with science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) are most likely to apply themselves to learning STEM in school, which may lead to successful careers that build on STEM. So, we combine play with STEM activities in each of our programs.

Families tell us:

“My daughter didn’t pay any attention to math in school but now she thinks math is fun because of games.“

“My 11-year-old always makes beeline for the science projects and the circuit building. I didn’t know he was a scientist.“

Every Sunday, we engage the children in two or more hands-on science projects and experiments, usually taking advantage of kits assembled by the Resource Area For Teachers (RAFT) or provided by the Society of Women Engineers or generous volunteers. It’s inspiring to see children “excavating” for “dinosaur bones” or building a solar car for instance.

Children also create electronic windmills, light shows and more using Snap Circuit kits and following step-by-step instructions program.

Our Computer Education for Families and Children class runs every Sunday.

And, a table comes alive each program with fun, volunteer-led games that tech math: from counting to multiplication to rounding and beyond.

And young children, ages 3 to 6, are making astounding progress learning math through the MathShelf station, available at every program.
